The study of spin wave and other types of magnetic excitations uses the same instrumentation as described in Scattering from lattice vibrations page. In particular, time-of-flight spectrometers and triple-axis spectrometers are useful.

As for the study of magnetic structures, also the study of magnetic excitations benefits from the use of polarized neutrons. This will be discussed in a later chapter (not yet finished).
